IB Learner Profiles

IB Learner Profiles

What is the IB Learner Profile and why is it so important for your learner's future?

The IB Learner Profile is the recognition that each learner is unique, and that each of them will acquire knowledge, critically digest information, and apply that knowledge in their own specific way. The attributes contained in all profiles are essential ideals and values that inspire the international education at IB. They unite and guide IB World Schools and PYP teachers in a common educational purpose: preparing our learners for the future.

These attributes reflect our long-term vision for education, human development, culture, and global citizenship. They represent who we are, what we value, and who we aspire to become.

What is the purpose of the IB Learner Profile?

The Learner Profile serves as a framework for human development. It’s not just about academic performance — it’s about nurturing ethical, curious, balanced, and courageous individuals. Through this profile, learners are encouraged to become thoughtful, principled, and empathetic global citizens who are capable of making meaningful contributions to the world.

What does the Learner Profile develop?

The IB Learner Profile is made up of 10 core attributes that are intentionally developed through curriculum and daily interactions:

Inquirers – curious, independent learners;

Knowledgeable – explore concepts and ideas deeply;

Thinkers – reasoned and ethical decision-makers;

Communicators – confident and effective in multiple languages;

Principled – honest, fair, and responsible;

Open-minded – appreciate diverse perspectives and cultures;

Caring – empathetic and respectful of others;

Risk-takers – brave and resilient in facing challenges;

Balanced – value well-being in all aspects of life;

Reflective – thoughtful and aware of personal growth.

How does it shape the learner?

When truly embedded, these attributes allow learners to:

Learners become active agents in their learning, capable of leading projects, collaborating across cultures, and responding ethically to real-world situations. These skills go beyond school — they prepare young people to thrive in universities, careers, and in society.

How does St. John's develop the Learner Profile?

At St. John’s International School, the Learner Profile is not a theory—it’s lived every day. Our curriculum is carefully designed to integrate these attributes into every subject, project, and interaction. Teachers intentionally guide learners to recognize, reflect upon, and apply the attributes in real contexts.

From Early Years through Primary and beyond, learners grow not just in knowledge, but in identity, agency, and global awareness.

We believe that nurturing the Learner Profile is one of the most powerful ways to shape compassionate, competent, and future-ready individuals.

A true advantage for life

Developing the Learner Profile is not just an academic goal — it's a life-changing journey. It gives each learner the mindset, attitudes, and tools to lead with confidence, act with integrity, and care for the world.

At St. John’s, we are proud to offer an educational experience where these values are not only taught, but deeply experienced — every day, in every class, in every action.
