Collaborative Learning at St. John’s – An IB PYP Approach

At St. John’s, collaborative learning is at the heart of our educational philosophy, rooted in the principles of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP). We believe that students learn best when they engage in meaningful interactions, share ideas, and construct understanding together.

In the PYP, collaborative learning is not simply working in groups — it is a purposeful process in which students develop communication, social, and thinking skills while exploring concepts and solving problems collectively. Through guided inquiry, shared responsibility, and reflective dialogue, learners deepen their understanding of the world and their role in it.

Our classrooms are designed to foster a culture of respect, open-mindedness, and cooperation. Students are encouraged to listen actively, contribute thoughtfully, and embrace diverse perspectives. Teachers act as facilitators, guiding students in building knowledge through collaboration while nurturing agency, voice, and choice.

Whether in small group discussions, interdisciplinary projects, peer feedback sessions, or community-based actions, collaborative learning at St. John’s promotes intellectual growth, emotional resilience, and a strong sense of belonging — key pillars of international-mindedness and lifelong learning.
